Big Willy’s

We had driven past Big Willy’s a number of times and we thought we’d go check it out and watch the Euro 2012 final there. Mike called to book us a table whilst walking back to the apartment to get ready. We decided we’d have some dinner there before the soccer. We got dressed and ready and hopped in the car for our 10-15 min drive which ended up taking 2 hours! Due to the festival being such a big event, the police were still trying to redirect traffic out of Flic en Flac. We called to say we would be late and instead of being there at 8pm, we arrived around 9:45pm. That was seriously some of the worst traffic that I have ever sat in.

Finally when we got to Big Willy’s we were welcomed by the Euro 2012 promo girls at the entrance and found that we had the best seats in the house! A table set for two right in front of the huge projector screen.

Image

Two tables away from us, there were 3 men doing a radio broadcast about the Soccer. There was two guys chatting away in French about the Euro 2012 and they were from Radio 1 (R1). They had banners up and everything.

Image

Whilst ordering our drinks and deciding what to eat, the promo girls came around and painted your supporting teams flag on your face.  Even the atmosphere felt competitive and it was a good even split between Italy and Spain Supporters.

Image

Our food arrived and was delicious, Mike had like a creamy chicken potjie, kind of like chicken a la king with veggies and rice. Was so good and homey, even the presentation was awesome as it came in a little potjie pot! I had the squid, wasn’t what I thought I was going to get, in my mind I kind of thought I was getting Calamari rings. Never assume. I got a big piece of squid, which I’ve never really had before with a side salad and fries. Interesting but very good. For dessert we had a fantastic warm chocolate tart and a chocolate mousse and cappacino’s to wash it down! Yum! It was the perfect way to end the meal!

Image

Whilst eating, between course and coffees we watched Spain play like champs and the energy in Big Willy’s was unreal. People were shouting, clapping, whistling, you name it. Took me back to 2010 during the Fifa World Cup. The atmosphere was so festive and energetic that our time at Big Willy’s was well worth the 2 hour traffic jam.

Image

And the cherry on top – Spain won!

What a way to end an awesome day!

We’ll definitely be going back to Big Willy’s. If you’re a meat lover and want great friendly service, it’s the place to go!

Big Willy’s for the win!

Emba Filao – Breakfast at Le Morne

We woke up with the plan to leave the apartment early, grab some breakfast and then go to our kite surfing lesson. The first place we tried (being Sunday) was closed, then we remembered a restaurant on the public beach in Le Morne, which was perfect as that’s where we were going for our kite surfing lesson. We pulled in, it was very quiet, seemed as if they had just opened.  Their menu is on a blackboard and you have to order your meal in the front and the waiter will bring it for you. They had all sorts, they have breakfasts, combo meals and curries. We could only have breakfast as the other menu was only available from 11am. So we did. Perfect.

We chose pack (combo) No. 2

2 Fried Eggs

2 Chicken Sausages

1 Small Grilled Tomato

Toast (4 slices each)

Pineapple Jam

Cheese

Orange Juice

Coffee

We enjoyed our meal in the lovely outdoor space looking out at the sea. Tasty and filling, I once again ate too much but just couldn’t help myself. We will definitely go back, the food was good, the value for money was good and Le Morne is just too beautiful, so where better to have some brekkies.

Mafiozzo

After our day at Casela we went to meet our new friend Jayson at Mafiozzo, an outdoor bar/restaurant that has a real island look to it. Everything is made from wood, the high tables, stools and fencing around it. We drive past it quite often, and always have a look in when we are going to the Spar. I really felt like pizza, Mike really felt like beer and we both really wanted to go there. So we did.

Mafiozzo has a really chilled out vibe and friendly service. My favourite thing about this place is there menu. The names of there meals are just too random. From “Blowjob Breakfast” to a “Tax Haven Pizza”. We had the Tax Haven Pizza and shared it amoungst the 3 of us. It was so good, with a nice crispy thing base and delicious topping we were ready for the night ahead.

Mafiozzo is my new best friend!

Go check it out, in the Pasadena Centre in Flic en Flac.

We totally got lost in conversation that we didn’t take any pic – will post at a later stage!

Annabella’s

Every evening I got excited to go for dinner just to see what Annabella’s had to offer.

Annabella’s is the main restaurant at Heritage Le Telfair Hotel. With its colonial style setting, the lovely atmosphere and unbelievable food – Annabella’s is a MUST-GO-TO! restaurant. Each night the menu is different and you get 3 options of your starter, mains and desserts. The best part about it is, if you are no sure what to order, you can walk into the “kitchen” and see what each dish looks like and watch it being plated up. One of the Head Chefs there, Carl, was just a pleasure to meet. All the staff are highly professional and friendly! Top notch service!

The name: Heritage Le Telfair was named after Charles Telfair. Charles Telfair was a botanist who has a huge influence on Mauritius. His wife’s name was Annabella, she was a water colour artist who loved to entertain people.

The food has a french influence and is gastronomically creative. Ginger ice-cream = YUM! Annabella’s can take a simple apple and turn it into something exciting and new.

My heart (which listens to my stomach most of the time) was filled with happiness after each meal at Annabella’s!

Food – Amazing

Service – High Class

Château de Bel Ombre

Image

Overlooking a beautiful french style garden with the sea in distance, we enjoyed our basket of pastries and freshly squeezed orange juice. Le Château is just the most beautiful setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. With its french style cuisine and stunning decor, Le Château is perfect for any occasion. It would make a fantastic wedding venue. The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making sure that you are happy. Le Château lies next to these gigantic trees that look as if they are pre-historic, their enormity is breath taking. These beautiful trees and the  lovely garden add to the peaceful atmosphere. It makes you feel like all you need to do is breathe in the fresh air and relax.

Le Château, if I’m correct, is a heritage site that was restored to become a restaurant. This gem can be found in Domaine de Bel Ombre.

Sunset Cafe

If you’re in the North and looking to enjoy a drink, snack or ice-cream, whilst overlooking the sea, the Sunset Cafe is just perfect.

Nestled on the Sunset Boulevard in Grand Baie. For such a little place they like to serve big beer, big ice-cream, big food. Lovely to have a drink and watch the sun set over the bay. They also have TV’s that air the English Premier League football- which makes this place rather popular for the locals that work near by.

Ile aux Cerfs

We booked a day trip to Ile aux Cerfs through a tour guide in Grand Baie. Not knowing we were in for quite the experience. We woke up early, had breakfast early and made sure we were ready to go. Our driver arrived at the hotel, rather quiet man and escorted us to the mini-bus. There was 1 lady already in the mini-bus, she was small, petite and also very quiet. And off we went to pick up the other. When the drive started I did think to myself that this man must be in quite a hurry to get to the next hotel. We got to the next hotel and picked up the rest of the people and off we went! Literally!  Our driver was driving so fast that people were hanging onto their seat praying. I genuinely thought we were all gonna die in this mini-bus. In South Africa, we have lots of mini-bus taxis which are dangerous and drive terribly, never did I think I would experience it in Mauritius. The quiet lady was still very calm whilst the rest of us were almost in tears. This driver was coming around sharp bends, in the wet weather, on the other side of the road, with just a honk of the hooter as warning to any oncoming vehicles. Eventually when we were traveling 140km/h through a small town did my cousin, sitting in front of me, scream out, “Hey Louis Hamilton! Can you slow down! You’re making us all sick-and if you can on driving this way, we’re all going to get sick in your car- so slow down!”

This man didnt quite understand what the problem was, he just kept looking into his rear view mirror with this puzzled look on his face. The quiet lady turned to us and said, “Don’t worry, everyone drives like this.” Finally we reached our destination. People couldnt get out of that mini-bus fast enough and the first thing everyone did was light a cigarette.

We were greeted by a strapping young guy to told us what we would be doing for the day and off we went on a small speed boat to Ile aux Cerfs. The weather was not great but it was still humid.

We went past the famous and renowned Le Touessrok- magnificent! Bordered with black rock and turquoise water. Google it or see the link at the bottom. Really stunning resort! Looking down into the water, it is so clear that you can see everything as you pass by. We also passed many fisherman along the way.

After an early wake up, traumatic taxi ride, and a thankfully calming boat trip we reached Ile aux Cerfs.

Ile aux Cerfs is so beautiful, definitely worth the trip. We walked around to explore our beautiful surrounding before we hopped on speed boat that would take us to lunch.

We hopped onto a boat to take us to our lunch. We arrived at a little remote  beach, with an odd little doc and what looked like a make-shift marquee made out of french racing green tarpaulin. This was our little restaurant we would be eating at. We were greeted by our “waiter” who had a fabulous mustache and were shown to our (outdoor plastic) seats.

The quiet lady from the mini-bus joined us for lunch. We started off with drinks, most popular was the jungle juice which consists of pretty much everything: Rum, wine, beer, vodka, juice and who knows what else. Along with the drinks arrived garlic bread for the table in a white bucket-didnt look very appealing but my goodness was it delicious! The kitchen was separated just by a simple “screen” type structure. Whilst we enjoyed our garlic bread and drinks, we were given a show, with drums and singing and dancing- was a really cool atmosphere. Waiting for the main, we were rather intrigued by the number of crabs that were on this tiny beach, what looked like rocky sand was in fact millions of crabs, all shapes, sizes and colours. Was fanscinating to watch how still there were until something or someone moved.

Main course was outstanding. It consisted of a piece of fish, a piece of chicken and a simple coleslaw! Really loved it- so simple looking yet so full of flavour! And our hosts were not shy either, if you wanted more you could have more-no problem. Our plates were taken away and as we were getting comfortable, waiting for our food to settle, a fork and a serviette were placed in front of us. Then out came a flame grilled rum banana. My cousin was horrified with the fact the banana had been placed on this serviette and not on a plate. Yet once again, simple but delicious! Really was once of the best meals I have had.

From our lunch we took a speed boat to go see some waterfalls-we went past a part of the island where there were massive houses, really pretty. The tour guys told us that celebrities like David Beckham owned those houses. We arrived at the waterfalls, felt as if we were in a jungle. Once we had spent some time there we went back to Ile aux Cerfs. Got back, ate some ice cream and then the rain came! It was time to go back anyway. The rain fall was heavy, so heavy that it took us 3 times longer to get back. We all had our towels covering us, trying to break the wind and stop the rain wetting our cameras. We were soaked by the time we got off the boat, even worse there was our Formula 1 taxi driver waiting for us. We tried to chat to him again and explain. To his understanding, the route he took was too windey and that was why we were complaining , so he would now take us on a different route. Bless him!

Banana Bar

I dont know much about the nightlife in Mauritius but I do know that this place is AWESOME! The vibes, the setting, the music, the live performances, the cocktails and the giant fairy light covered tree put this bar on the map. Its so lovely-if I could own it I would! The service is super friendly. It’ll make you never want to leave. The live music they have is out of this world- truly talented! Didn’t want them to stop! EVER!
